User Guide: XY-Pad
XY PAD :
The XY Pad module lets you control 12 parameters at once with 4 dots – each with their own X, Y and Z-axis.To activate or deactivate the dots, tap on theparameters preview windows within their respective control menu.
To Assign Parameters to the X, Y and Z axis of each Dot, tap the « Parameter selection » icon.
The first column is the X Y Z selection section : Quick tap on the dot and axis of your choice to start configuring its assignment.
Tracks, Returns and the Master are shown from top to bottom in the second column. Select one track, and in the third column Tap on one of the shown devices or on the mixer device element. The last column presents you with a list of all available parameters for the selected device. Tap on one of them to select it for the currently active axis.
The last section contains a slider which lets you set up the range of values applied to this parameter, by default 0 to 100% . You can modifiy the range by pinching the slider.
Your first parameter is assigned and activated.
Repeat the process for the other axes by tapping quickly on the dot and axis of your choice. Note that if you have a long tap on an axis button containing an active parameter, this parameter selection will be deleted.
If you select a parameter for the Z axis note that while the X and Y axes can take different values depending on their position, the Z axis can only distinguish two different states: touched and not-touched.
Instead of a mixer or a device parameter you can also assign a midi parameter by tapping the Midi icon , you can select a midi CC or a midi note. Slide your finger up or down over the numbers to pick the channel, CC or note number.
The « automatically Assign » button allows you to set several midi parameters to several axes and dots in a row. Unlike the live parameters selection you must tap the validation button to activate the midi parameter. Tap again the parameter selection icon to go back to the configuration menu.
Finally, you can set the values range for the midi parameters by pinching the slider.
Note that you can also quickly assign a parameter to an axis by simply use the ‘learn’ function, for that :
Make sure that the Auto learn option is turned on in the general settings of touchAble
tap the « Parameter selection » icon then move the desired parameter in Ableton Live, or within touchAble by using a different view. Now this parameter is assigned to the axis and ready to be used as soon as you close the parameter selection menu.
Now you can start using the xy pad, with a maximum of 12 parameters assigned to the 4 dots. To select a dot, tap a dot or arm a dot so it will be the first responder to your touches. Then you can simply attract the selected dot by tapping anywhere on the pad, as long as your tap is not too close from another dot. In this mode you can also control several dots at once, and create complex parameter changes.
Like the other modules you can display the XY pad in full view or Half view. In this case you can quickly select a dot by pressing one of the 4 colored squares.
There is also a « Momentary Mode ». In this one only the active Dot can be moved. It will jump back to its initial position after the finger is released. To change the dot controlled in this mode, tap the corresponding arm button.
In normal mode you can apply Gravity and bouncing to each dot by selecting the dot of your choice and tapping the « Physics » button.
Tap and hold the ‘gravity direction’ button to change the direction. A popup window shows up 9 different options – including 8 directions and ‘no gravity’ in the middle. Now drag your finger to the desired direction and release your finger. The force wlll be immediatly appplied to the dot and it will start to drop in the direction you set.
you also have the possibility to change the force of gravity and bounce individually for each dot.
Higher percentage values for gravity mean that a stronger force will be applied to the dot . With the Bouncing effect, each time the dot hits a wall the force of the bouncing effect will decrease by a set amount of speed.
On top of the module there are 8 snapshot slots. Touch or slide through one or more of the slots to take snapshots of the current position of the dots.
Once a slot is filled with a snapshot it will light up in blue.
You can now press the filled slots to make the dots jump to the saved positions. When you activate snapshot mode the dots will not jump but morph to their destination in a set time.
To change the duration, hold it and set a value.
To delete a snapshot enter deletion mode by tapping on the Trash button and then tap on the snapshot that you want to delete.
When you activate the recording button, all movements on armed Dots will be recorded and played back after releasing the moving Finger. If you touch and move again the same dot it will record another gesture until you release your finger. It will always automatically arm the last touched dot or the one that you last armed manually on the dots menu. Tap recording button again to turn the recording process OFF.
When activated the Loop and reverse options on the bottom right corner will change the behavior of the automation when playing back.
When both are deactivated, The play back runs through the automation once and stops.
When Loop is on, and Reverse is off: The clip runs repeatedly from start to end.
When Loop is off, and Reverse is on: The clip runs from start to finish, makes a turn and runs from end to start - then stops.
When Loop is on, and Reverse is on: The clip runs repeatedly back and forth.
With the xy pad you can also divide or multiply by two the speed of the playback. Each time you record a gesture, the length of the playback is shown in the corresponding dot’s menu. Use the left arrow to divide by 2 the speed or the right one to multiply it.
Once you have set up an xy pad template you want to save for later use, tap the « save as » icon, type a name for your template and press return. It will save all of the 4 dots into 1 bank at once. Banks include the assignments made with current Live Set, snapshots, Automations that are applied to the dots, as well as Loop, Reverse, Gravity and Bounce settings.
When you tap on the « load bank » icon, you will be presented with a list of banks already created and saved. To access one of them, tap it.
From this menu you can also delete a bank.
Another way to get access to your bank is to use the Quick button. If activated, saved banks can be displayed in the 8 snapshot slots. Tap a slot containing a bank to load it or tap an empty slot to include the current one for later access. This way you never hide your xy pad while performing and you can jump easily from one bank to another, expanding the amount of controllable parameters .
You can backup your XY pad banks on your computer by connecting your ipad to your computer . Open Itunes, select your iPad, go to ‘Apps’ tab, and selec touchAble 2 in the file sharing list. Drag and drop the « XYPresets» folder anywhere on your computer.
